While you should always consult your favorite cosmetic dentist with questions regarding any dental treatments or procedures, there’s 3 things you should know about Invisalign before getting treatment. At Silverstein and Vinciguerra General, Family, Cosmetic, & Implant Dentistry, we know how disappointing having crooked teeth can be and we want you to be as fully informed as possible before coming in for a consultation. So continue reading to find out more.

1.What is the Recommended Wear Time for Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are removable and can be taken out for eating and dental hygiene, but taking them out for extended periods is not recommended. In order for your teeth to move in a predictable and safe manner within their supporting structures of gums and bone, constant force needs to be applied to your teeth. By leaving your aligners out for more than a couple of hours spread throughout the day, your teeth will not track properly and the teeth health structures can be overloaded and compromised.

It is generally recommended that you wear your Invisalign aligners at least 22 hours a day, with around 2 hours allotted for daily food consumption and other activities that may require removal. If you shorten the amount of time worn per day, you’ll likely have to wear your aligners for a longer time in order to obtain the ideal movement and retention. Moving teeth is fairly simple, it just takes time and pressure in order to move them properly. If you shorten the daily wear time, your total treatment time lengthens.

The entire treatment usually takes 12 months but it can longer or even shorter depending on how long you leave your aligners in each day and how misaligned your teeth are. Throughout the duration of your treatment, your Invisalign tray should be replaced every two weeks.

2. Lipstick Risks While Wearing Invisalign

Unfortunately, many colored lipsticks and glosses stick to the aligners and the attachments. Clear lip balm and gloss are generally good to go but they can leave a waxy residue on the aligners as well. You may have to cut back on your application or retrain yourself on how you apply the makeup in order to prevent it from sticking to your aligner or spreading to your teeth. You can also speak with your cosmetic dentist or search online for additional tips in regards to lipstick and Invisalign.

3. How Often Should You be Brushing?

Since Invisalign aligners are removable, they shouldn’t interfere with your oral care routine. Simply take them out when it’s time to brush and without wires and metal of traditional braces, you can floss and brush your teeth just as you’ve always done.
